Halloween Pretzel Lolly
Chocolate Project

By Bob Sherman

Pretzel lollys take the traditional chocolate lolly in a new and fun direction. Using a pretzel in place of a lolly stick gives us a cross between the ever popular chocolate covered pretzel and chocolate lollys. For this project I used only simple basic mold painting to show how fast and easy it is to make a bunch of these for your Halloween party. I selected this mold because it had a variety of designs, but there is quite a selection of Halloween pretzel lolly molds to choose from.

Many of the items you may need can be ordered directly from this page for your convenience.

PLEASE NOTE!! - Although chocolate making is relatively safe for the entire family to participate, adult supervision is required.

Chocolate
I prefer to use chocolate wafers designed for home molding chocolate. My preferred brand is Merckens which works well with all chocolate molding projects and tastes great.

Melting Chocolate
For a small project like this either melting method may be used.

Double Boiler - See Double Boiler Usage Instructions.

A microwave may also be used but care must be taken not to overheat the chocolate.

  1. Place the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Heat for 30 seconds (small amounts such as the orange used here will require less - start with 15 seconds).
  3. Remove and stir.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the chocolate is creamy.
  5. Optimum pouring temperature is about 90 degrees F. Note: Pouring chocolate molds hotter than 160 degrees F. will destroy the mold. Do not place the thermometer in the microwave!

Step By Step Instructions

1. No modifications to the mold are needed. 2. The ghost cavity was filled approximately 75% with white chocolate. Avoid filling these to the top to avoid overflow when the pretzel is placed in position.
3. Position the pretzel rod. Note some brands of pretzel rods are straighter than others so they work better for these. If desired they may be rotated to coat the back with chocolate. Rotating makes them stronger, but is messier. 4. More white chocolate and a squeeze bottle were used to paint the skeleton.
5. Spoon some orange chocolate for the scarecrow head. If desired more elaborate painting may be done on these, but they look pretty good with just the orange head. 6. Fill the skeleton and scarecrow cavities 75% with dark chocolate. Insert the pretzels.

7. Place the mold in the freezer just long enough to get the chocolate to de mold easily. Leaving these in the freezer too long will cause cracks in the chocolate.
